Iceland has been inhabited for only 1100 years. The first Norwegian settlers arrived in year 870 and only 60 years later they formed the worlds first parliament. Iceland became a republic in 1944. The island is now inhabited by 320.000 people.
The capital Reykjavik located on the south western corner of Iceland has a population of 103.000 people. Reykjavik was just a big farm for several hundred years from the beginning of year 900. It was not until the end of year 1700 that it evolved into a small village.
Almost all electricity in Iceland is produced from geothermal energy and hydropower. Thanks to the huge renewable energy source which provides for most of Iceland’s primary energy production, the aluminium refinery in Straumsvik benefits from cheap electricity and consumes almost 40% of the total electricity production.
The tourism has been steadily increasing since the 1980’ties. The tourist are attracted by the spectacular untouched nature of Iceland with it’s volcanoes, hot springs and glaciers.
